Chrome gets smarter at spotting scam pop-ups and fake update tricks

Google has updated Chrome to better spot scam websites that pretend to be antivirus warnings, browser update notices, or other urgent pop-ups designed to trick people into taking harmful actions. The update also adds stronger warnings for suspicious sites and newer tricks that try to get users to run unsafe commands on their devices.

Who is at risk

Anyone who uses Google Chrome, especially people who click pop-ups or are asked to install updates, security tools, or copy and paste commands into their device.

What to watch for

Watch for alarming pop-ups claiming your device is infected, urgent messages telling you to update your browser, or websites asking you to run unusual steps to fix a problem.

What to do

Turn on Chrome’s Enhanced Protection, keep Chrome updated, and do not follow instructions from pop-ups that ask you to install software or run commands.
