Google takes down huge Android TV box botnet tied to secret backdoor
Google says it helped shut down a large network of over 1.3 million Android devices, mostly TV streaming boxes, that were secretly being used by criminals. The company believes one device maker, Videostrong, built in hidden access that let others misuse people’s home internet connections without their knowledge.
Who is at risk
People who own low-cost Android TV boxes or set-top streaming devices, especially lesser-known brands, are most at risk.
What to watch for
Watch for unfamiliar streaming box brands, devices that run hot or stay active when not in use, or unexplained slowdowns in your home internet.
What to do
If you use an Android TV box from an unknown or untrusted brand, disconnect it from the internet, check for official updates, and replace it if you cannot verify it is safe.
